Sandy Leafed Fig (Ficus Heteropleura)
This shrub, usually epiphytic, may grow as a straggly bush of up to 4 meters high. In Singapore, it can be found on mature wayside trees along the Tanglin area and on old trees along the forest margins. It can also be found growing out of fences, from cracks in roofs adn walls and as an epiphyte from urban trees. One of its distinguishing feature is the stiff leathery leaf and the prominent raised side veins on its underside which loop to rejoin the midrib. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green and the rough underside of the leaves are often diagnostic of this species, hence its common name. The figs are small (0.5-1 cm wide), globose, covered with minute stiff hairs and white spots. They have long necks that look like stalks. They can grow singly or in clusters in the leaf axils and the figs can ripen from bright orange to fire-cracker red.
