NATIVE SPECIES OF SINGAPORE
The present Garden City of Singapore has its origin in the far-sighted vision that was set more than 40 years ago during the early days of nationhood to rapidly green the city. These early greening effort relied on finding cost effective and practical solutions for putting plants into the urban environment, including using fast growing and flowering trees that could adapt to the Singapore climactic condition. Many of the most common urban trees today such as the Rain Tree, American Mahogany and Senegal Khaya are exotics (non-native species) introduced to achieve the rapid greening of Singapore. It is estimated that there are about 2200 plant species that are now cultivated in Singapore of which only about 490 or 22% are native to Singapore.
A native or indigenous plant species of Singapore is one that occurs naturally here. Such a species has evolved in association with the numerous other native animal. microbial and plant species over thousands or even millions of years. Most species that are considered native to Singapore include those that are also native in the surrounding regions.
