ELEPHANT EAR PLANT (Alocasia Macrorrhiza)
This member of the yam family is widely planted
for its attractive huge foliage. It is a plant commonly found in the forest of Singapore as well as many
landscaping jobs. Growing to a height of 1 – 1.5m, the leaves of this plant are
broad, stiff and pointed upwards, resembling an elephant's ear. If you are
lucky to spot the flowers, the small flowers are enclosed by a yellowish
spathe. Do be careful of the sap from the plant as it can cause irritation to the
hands and will burn the tongue, lips and throat if ingested. Its flowers have
been known to cause delirium and stomach cramps when ingested. In certain
Pacific Islands, the natives have been known to use the root tubers as food
