COPPERPOD TREE / YELLOW FLAME TREE (Peltophorum Terocarpum)
This native of coastal Malaysia is a popular garden tree grown for it’s shade and flowers. It is also called the Yellow Flame Tree or Yellow Poinciana since its umbrella shape and small doubly –compound fern-like leaves are similar to those of Delonix Regia. (The bright –yellow flowers which appear in erect clusters are smaller and different in shape, however and the tree as a whole is denser).
Flowering is followed by masses of thin, flat copper-colored pods, each holding 3 to 4 seeds, which give the tree it’s other popular name of Copperpod Tree. The bark is sold in Java for internal use against dysentery, as well as used externally for sprains, muscle aches or even as an eye lotion.
Do you know….in Java, the bark of the tree is used in to make a dark brown color for dyeing batik cloth yellow-brown.
