CHANGI TREE (Hopea Sangal)
The Changi Tree originated in South East Asia. Characterized by a slender trunk, it has thick branches high on the trunk and the tree can grow up to 40 meters in height.
Do you know … an old Changi tree with a girth of 3.3 meters, believed to be more than 150 years old, was discovered in Changi area by nature enthusiast in Sep 2002. Thought to be extinct, this 35 meter tall tree was also speculated to have given Changi its name. However on Nov 2002, it was cut down without the approval of the National Parks Board that administer a tree conservation area within which this particular tree was located. A public outcry led to an apology by the offending company, which was also charged in court and fined in compensation for the loss of the tree and for illegal felling, the first such ruling in Singapore’s legal history. Fortunately seedlings collected from the tree before it was felled were nurtured in the NParks Pasir Panjang nursery. One of the sapling is now planted in Tanjong Pagar constituency and another one planted in the Istana grounds. The fallen tree was made into various wooden sculpture and can be seen at the Singapore Zoo
