BLIMBING (Averrhoa Bilimbi)
Coming from the plant family of Oxalidaceae it is a native to South East Asia. It is slow growing and sparsely branched. The tree is slow growing and can grow up to 11 meters tall. Its leaves are light green, pinnate and the flowers are red and tiny, and directly from the trunk and main branches. The fruits develop and dangle from stout stems, and turn yellowish on maturity, resembling little gherkin cucumbers. They are very juicy (but extremely sour), with a high oxalic acid content. In Malaysia, the fruits are usually stewed with sugar, made into a pickles or added to curries and also used as a Tamarind substitute.
